Sad News
We are sad to report the passing of our Dean Robert Reinhart on Friday, December 17th at 7:20pm. Bob celebrated his 93rd birthday on December 13th. MagicTimes.com reported on the Internet:
---
Robert Reinhart died on December 17th at the age of 93. He was a contemporary and friend of magicians such as Dai Vernon, Charlie Miller, Cardini, Jarrett and many others of that time. He was also instrumental in the magic they performed. His most recent influences can be seen in
Rudy Coby who told MagicTimes that, "Robert Reinhart was my mentor. He took me under his wing at the age of ten and never stopped teaching me." The last time Dai Vernon was in New York he remarked, "Bob's the last one of us left." Outside of magic he was a reviewer for "Variety" magazine over a period of five decades.
---
Contributions may be made in Bob's memory to the Society of American Magicians Houdini Hospital Fund, 1735 East 26th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11229. A broken wand ceremony is planned for the February meeting. Bob Reinhart will be greatly missed.

Treasurer Roger Lewin organized and ran the annual auction with help from son Evan with great success. Past V.P. Gale Alexandar acted as auctioneer and moved many items on and off the auction block so fast you didn't dare blink. Another advantage we had this year was an overhead
projector provided by Central Hudson that was able to display many of the smaller items up for sale.
We're in M-U-M
Our Scribe Craig Kunaschk has done a great job with a play by play review of our meetings in recent issues of M-U-M. Reviews of the September meeting may be found on page 56 of the December issue and the October meeting is on page 68 of the January issue.
To make it easier to find assembly reports, M-U-M Editor David Goodsell has grouped the reports alphabetically by state and city.

Wow! Another great response to our scheduled workshop. Frank Monaco demonstrated a great way to store an appearing cane after making it appear, a way to store silks and a nifty hammer multi tool for repairing props on the fly. George Franzen brought klick-fix grippers to hold onto his ropes and used a mega mike to create various sound effects. Ed Fitchett gave a smooth demonstration of a rare dye tube like silk gimmick that allows a silk disappear and then reappear. Harvey Berg showed off some electronic wizardry from a New York City spy shop that creates astounding e.s.p. effects. Lew Neporent and Ed Fitchett described variations on using blindfolds and codes for e.s.p. Don Deich exposed a wallet and clear prediction bag that he considers useful in reading minds. Host Steve Johnson closed with showing a mike stand clip-on table and a flash zombie gimmick.

A Swiss guy, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Americans are waiting.
"Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he asks. The two Americans just stare at him.
"Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" he tries. The two continue to stare. "Parlare Italiano?" No
response. "Hablan ustedes Espanol?" Still nothing.
The Swiss guy drives off, extremely disgusted. The first American turns to the second and says, "Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language."
"Why?" says the other. "That guy knew four languages, and it didn't do him any good."

Thank you for reminding us...
The following was from the October 1999 issue of Magic Magazine. It was in Doug Henning's own words...
I was getting a bit of a reputation, and I was invited by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to perform on Christmas shows for troops. At one point on the tour, they asked if I would do a show for a group of Inuits (Eskimos). We were on the edge of this little town in the wilderness, 400 miles from the North Pole, and about 60 below zero. I set up my show in a little building, and the Inuits came in to watch. They sat on the floor in their parkas, and I did what I thought was some pretty good stuff. They just sat there, didn't smile, didn't say a word and, at the end, nobody applauded. But, they were completely focused on me, like I was some sort of phenomenon. Only one of them spoke English, so I asked him "Did you like the show?"
"Yes, we like show," he said. Then I asked "Did everybody like the magic?" He said, "The magic?" I explained that I was trying to entertain people. He said "Entertainment is good, but why are you doing magic? The whole world is magical..." We sat down on the floor and he told me "It's magic that the snow falls, all those little crystals are completely different... that's magic." I said "But what about when I made the rabbit and doves appear?"
"Why do you do those things?" he said. "It's magic when the walrus appears each spring, he comes from nowhere... that's magic." Now, I was grasping, trying to explain magic to him. I thought of my "Zombie" which I thought was my best thing. I said " I made that beautiful silver ball float in the air... that's magic" "But there's a ball of fire floating through the sky every day. It keeps us warm, gives us light... that's magic." Then the Inuits started talking among themselves. The man came to me with a big smile on his face, and said "Now, we know why you're doing that. It's because your people have forgotten the magic. You're doing it to remind them of the magic. Well done!" I cried right then. I've never told anyone this story. I said, "Thank you for teaching me about the magic. I didn't know." That was really the first time I knew what wonder was. It was the most memorable thing that has ever happened to me. I never forgot that, inside. That's why I became a magician.

Reply from George Sands
At our last meeting, many of you signed a "get well" card to George Sands who is in Phoenix, AZ. Mrs. Sands (Arlene) replied that "George has asked me to thank you and the Al Baker Assembly #35 for the card. George enjoys getting these notes. It's wonderful to hear from old and new friends." (George used to visit our club regularly when he was working in the Catskills and was always very generous and helpful in promoting magic.)
Footnote: George's son, Alan, who also visited our club with his father, telephoned me with his appreciation for our card. Alan said he will be performing at the Saratoga County Fair in Ballston Spa, NY July 18-23 and would like to visit with any of the boys in our Assembly.

September Meeting
Thursday, September 21, 2000 - 7:30pm
Milanese Restaurant, 115 Main Street, Poughkeepsie
Program: Lecture by Ali Bongo and Open House FREE!
Hosted by Frank Monaco 229-9765 Frank430@aol.com
President's Words
I want to welcome everyone back from what I hope was a Healthy and Happy summer. This year promises to be a good one, and to prove it we are kicking off the year with Ali Bongo on Sept. 21st which is a Thursday and NOT our usual Second Tuesday of the month, so mark your calendars. If you have never seen Ali Bongo before you are in for a real treat. He is seasoned performer who never ceases to entertain, educate, enlighten and always in a humorous manner. You won't want to miss this one if at all possible.
The officers have met over the summer, along with Former National President Craig Dickson, and have come up with some interesting ideas and changes to enhance the club overall. We will be trying to serve refreshments at as many meetings as possible for starters. Secondly, I plan on trying to get some quality lecturers that we can all enjoy. Also, we are planning on bringing back the 1/2 hour workshop before the meetings which most people seemed to like. I also plan on having a formal, but short, business meeting each and every time, which will include: The Treasurers report, Minutes from the last meeting, Old Business, New Business, and Happenings in the area that pertain to magic. On a side note, it has come to our attention that all the people that are current members of our local club, are not National Members of S.A.M.. So I urge you please make an effort to join National after our first meeting. Also, any new members that we accept will have an option to present a trick, presentation, short speech on their magic interests,
etc., to just the Officers or Officers and the club members. Current members of our local club that become National members will not have to go through this process and will be grandfathered in because they have already proven themselves in good standing.
In closing I would just like to say I look forward to seeing everyone in September where it promises to be a great first meeting.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Ali Bongo lecture for our opening meeting. I am sorry I couldn't be in attendance, but I understand through several club members that it went very well and was well attended. I want to formally thank George Franzen for running the meeting and Steve Johnson
for making this lecture happen, and handling all the details in my absence. Steve did and excellent job, as usual, under an extremely short span of time. Thanks again Steve! We are planning some interesting things in the coming months that I hope you will all enjoy. As we mentioned earlier, we would like to bring back the "before meeting" workshops at 7:00PM. These will be informal sessions on various subjects, before the actual meetings. The workshop in October will be on False Cuts and Shuffles. So bring a deck of cards with you, and some of your favorite moves for false cuts and shuffles. That's all for now......hope to see everyone in October!
October Meeting
Tuesday, October 10, 2000 - 7:30pm
Central Hudson Auditorium, 284 Rte. 9, Poughkeepsie
Program: Lecture on Humor by Jack Shea
Members: FREE Guests: $5
Hosted by Frank Monaco 229-9765 Frank430@aol.com
Jack Shea presents his magical programs as good clean fun and they can have a motivational slant as well. Magic and Humor are the tools used to get a point across in a very memorable way. The programs offer great flexibility and can be tailored to your specific needs. There are stage performances, programs done from a small platform or from the floor, as well as the more intimate and very popular Up-Close Magic done inches from the spectator's nose. All are done in a tasteful manner and without audience or volunteer embarrassment!
Last Meeting
Ali Bongo kept us all thinking about creativity with all of his unique magic creations and insights on performing magic on television.

President's Words
Hi All,
I want to thank Jack Shea once again for all the great info he passed on to us last month during his Humor lecture. Jack is one funny guy. Even though he tossed in some real "groaners" it was a great lecture with a good member turnout. Thanks again Jack!
This month's lecture promises to be just as good. We are lucky to have such a talented membership, where once again we use our own members to provide us with another fine lecture. Harvey Berg will be doing this month's lecture, and if you have not seen Harvey lecture before... Don't miss this! Harvey's effects have blown all of us away before, and this time will be no different. Harvey promises a lot of new effects to share with the club, and as usual, all of these mind blowing effects require no complicated sleight of hand. Some of you may know that this lecture that Harvey will be doing for us has taken him to Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, and this summer, the British Isles. It promises to be one lecture that you will remember for quite some time, so don't miss it.
IMPORTANT! Bring your S.A.M. National membership card to be admitted
free. Those that do not show their card at the door will be charged $10
Last month several of the officers brought to my attention that many people are not members in good standing with SAM National, and additionally have not paid their dues with our local club as well. I will be asking Roger Lewin, our treasurer, to provide me with a list of current paid local members. This list will be kept at the door when people come in, and I will be checking it. Anyone that is not an Al Baker local member will need to pay their dues then and there or pay $10 for the lecture itself. We have tried to remind people again and again. I believe we keep the rules as "lax" as possible to give people enough chance to pay their dues, but unfortunately we still have people taking advantage of the situation at hand. We do not think it is fair to the members that do pay faithfully, every year, and are in good standing with SAM National. This is NOT a get tough policy, it is simply standard operating procedure for SAM National to allow us to have an established club like Al Baker Assembly #35. Also, please remember to bring your current SAM National card with you as well, and be prepared to show it at the door if necessary (yes we have a list of those people too). If you do not have a SAM National card, then we will provide you with a form to obtain one. Please understand, once again, this is not a get tough policy and I do not want anyone to be offended by this, it is just how the club should be run. I want everyone to feel welcome to our club, but also, I want to be fair to the members that do have all dues paid and are members of SAM National. Simply put, we should show respect for the club itself. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call me either at home 845-229-9765 or work 845-433-4713. Thank you and I hope to see you all
on Tuesday, November 14th.

THIS MONTH
Tuesday - 12/11/2000
AUCTION!
Hosted by Roger Lewin
SAM #35 Newsletter
President's Words
President's Words
I hope everyone had a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving! To start off, I would first like to thank Harvey Berg for providing us with another great lecture. Harvey was tremendous fun to watch as well as learn from. He presented us with a plethora of mind-boggling material, which did not involve any complicated sleights at all. Everyone who attended was definitely treated to some top-notch effects that could be added to almost anyone's close-up act. Thanks again Harvey for giving so much of your time and talent.
I also have to say I was pleasantly surprised by all the positive feedback I received as I checked for membership cards and collected dues. I have to thank everyone for their cooperation and for showing the respect that the club deserves. Next month traditionally promises to have a good turn out because of the auction. Once again, I will be checking the attendees for paid dues, and SAM National cards. There were a few people last month that I handed applications to for SAM National. Please be prepared to show your cards or at the very least a canceled check written to SAM as proof that you did join.
A few of the board members got together this month and went over many things, including future lectures, banquet plans, workshops, etc. We are currently formalizing plans for all of the above and will be letting you know shortly how things turn out. Some of the names that were discussed
in accordance to the above were David Roth, Meir Yedid, George Schindler, Ben Robinson, just to name a few. We are trying our hardest to put together some meetings and events that all can enjoy....so stay tuned.
That is all for right now, so thanks for everyone's indulgence in some of the changes we are making and hope to see you in December.
